At Beat the Streets Baltimore, we don’t just train wrestlers—we build scholar-athletes. Our program is grounded in the belief that academic success and athletic excellence go hand in hand. Through an innovative model that blends daily wrestling practice with personalized academic support, we’re helping students grow—in the classroom, on the mat, and in life.
We operate using a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) that combines athletics with academic Response to Intervention (RTI) strategies. Students receive structured support based on their individual academic needs:
Participation in wrestling is directly tied to academic effort. Students are expected to meet academic benchmarks, attend tutoring sessions, and complete skill-building exercises to remain eligible for matches, trips, and leadership opportunities.
During our 5-week Summer 2024 program (July 1–August 1), in partnership with Mwerevu Education, we delivered targeted academic instruction alongside wrestling training at four Baltimore sites.
Students at Holabird Academy showed the highest gains, averaging 1.2 years of growth in Math in just 3 months, thanks to consistent participation in daily academic sessions paired with structured wrestling practice.
Wrestling teaches discipline, resilience, and focus—skills that translate directly to academic performance. By tying academic accountability to athletic opportunity, we’ve created a motivational loop that keeps students engaged. Our coaches and academic mentors work together to reinforce good habits, celebrate progress, and intervene early when students fall behind.
Whether through study halls, post-practice tutoring, or one-on-one academic coaching, students are surrounded by support—and held to high expectations.
From year-round wrestling leagues and school-day resource classes to summer intensives and national duals trips, every part of our program reinforces both academic and athletic growth. Our MTSS-based model ensures that each student has a path toward success—whether they need foundational skills, enrichment, or intensive support.
It’s a pipeline for academic achievement, personal growth, and opportunity.
