Resource Teaching

Wrestling as a Daily Academic & Physical Development Tool

At Beat the Streets Baltimore, we believe wrestling belongs in school—not just after school. That’s why we’ve introduced Resource Wrestling Classes as part of the school-day curriculum in partnership with schools like Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle School.

This pioneering model brings introductory amateur wrestling into the classroom, making it accessible to all students while reinforcing core academic and social-emotional skills.

Wrestling as Curriculum

In our Resource Wrestling Classes, students in grades 3–8 receive structured instruction in wrestling fundamentals during the school day. These classes are designed to introduce students to the sport in a safe, supportive environment while building confidence, coordination, and classroom discipline.

School-Day Benefits

By integrating wrestling into the regular school schedule, we eliminate barriers like transportation and time constraints that often limit participation in after-school sports. Students engage in physical activity during school hours, which research shows improves focus, behavior, and academic performance.

Partner Spotlight: Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle School

Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle School is one of our flagship partners in this innovative approach. Together, we’ve embedded wrestling into the daily specials rotation, giving students weekly exposure to the sport in a developmentally appropriate setting.

With support from school leadership and physical education staff, our instructor leads two age-based sections—Grades 3–6 and Grades 6–8—ensuring that every student, regardless of experience or athletic ability, has a chance to participate.

Bridging the Gap

By bringing wrestling into the classroom, we’re not just building athletes—we’re creating a pipeline of prepared, confident, and motivated students. Resource Wrestling introduces the sport in a way that is inclusive, instructional, and transformative—laying the foundation for future participation in competitive programs and academic enrichment opportunities.
